Understanding How the Male Catheter Process Works
The male catheter process is different from female catheterization because males have a few different types of equipment choices. Males can use an external condom catheter, which is less invasive than the typical indwelling catheter. Some men find it difficult to keep this external catheter in place and move onto using the indwelling catheter to avoid incontinent mishaps. Procedures for incontinence catheterization are very similar between men and women who use the indwelling devices.
Purpose of Catheterizing
The purpose of using a catheter with patients is to alleviate embarrassing incontinence issues. Incontinence is when the bladder relieves itself and the patient does not have control over this. Sometimes, incontinence happens at night and can be monitored or other external methods can be used. But when incontinent issues begin to affect the day-to-day living of patients, then catheterization is discussed. Catheters are also used for patients who have mobility issues either permanently because of a medical issue or for patients who are recovering from a surgical event. (more…)
