Medical Conditions That Might Require Catheter Use

Catheterization is a medical procedure that is most often used for the collection of urine for various periods of time as the result of a medical condition or injury.  Depending on the duration of catheter use, a variety of catheters might be used.  The types of catheters that might be used are indwelling, intermittent, and condom catheters.  Your doctor will be able to determine the right one for you based on your medical condition and the expected duration of its use.  As far as the reasons for catheterization, there can be various injuries, illnesses, and surgeries that might require catheters either for a short or long period of time.

Often, patients with mobility issues can require catheterization.  People with multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or other stages of immobility might need to use a catheter indefinitely.  When they are used as a result to nervous system problems, as is the case with multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries, the patient will face long-term use and will need to be able to self-cath or have a caregiver that can do it for them.  In this case, indwelling catheters are most likely used as the best way to provide relief.
